Gold purity

24K, 22K, 18K and 14K explained

Pure gold is too soft for most jewellery, so it is mixed with other metals for strength. The karat tells you how much of the piece is gold; the hallmark proves it. Every ARA tag and product page shows both, for example 22K · 916.

Gold purity by karat
KaratGold contentHallmarkUsed for
24K 99.9% 24K999 Coins and bars
22K 91.6% 22K916 Traditional and bridal jewellery
18K 75% 18K750 Diamond and studded jewellery
14K 58.5% 14K585 Everyday diamond pieces; the hardest wearing

Silver is marked the same way: 925 for sterling silver, 999 for fine silver, and the tested percentage for traditional pieces such as payal and bichhiya. Each silver piece on this site shows its purity.

Reading a hallmark

Check any piece in a minute

Hallmarked gold carries three laser-engraved marks, usually on the clasp or inside a ring or bangle.

  • BIS standard markTested at a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre.
  • Purity gradeKarat and fineness: 22 karat, 91.6% gold.
  • Six-character HUIDA unique code for that one piece.

Check it yourself

  1. Install the free BIS CARE app from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Tap "Verify HUID" and enter the six-character code from the piece or your bill.
  3. Check the purity, the jeweller and the hallmarking centre it shows.

Gold jewellery from ARA is BIS hallmarked. If a piece's HUID is not shown online, ask us for it and check it in the app, or check it together with us at the counter.

How a price is built

Gold, making, stones and GST

Every price on this site is the gold at today's rate, plus diamonds or stones, the making charge and any other charges, plus 3% GST. The same arithmetic is on our tags and on your bill.

  1. GoldNet weight × today's rate for its karat. Stones are never weighed in.
  2. Diamonds and stonesAs tagged: carats and count are shown on every diamond piece.
  3. MakingPer gram, a percentage of the gold value, or fixed. Always its own line.
  4. Other chargesHallmarking or certification, where they apply.
  5. GST3% on the subtotal.
  1. Gold is charged on net weight, not gross.

Stones and beads are never charged at the gold rate.

  2. Making is its own line.

Per gram, percentage or fixed, it is never hidden in the rate.

  3. One rate, online and at the counter.

Our rates come hourly from the same billing system as our showroom tags.

Caring for jewellery

Keep every piece like new
  • Last on, first offPut jewellery on after perfume, hairspray and make-up; take it off before bathing, swimming or exercise.
  • Store pieces separatelyKeep each piece in its own soft pouch or box, so harder stones don't scratch softer gold.
  • Clean gentlyWarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then pat dry with a lint-free cloth. No harsh chemicals.
  • Silver darkens with airWipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing and store it in a closed pouch.
